Who We Are
Who We Are...

Milledge Avenue Baptist Church is a community of believers that have made our home near Five Points in Athens.

We are a big enough church to offer a wide variety of youth and education programs, yet a small enough church to know everyone on Sunday mornings. We are a wide and diverse mix of ages and occupations, yet we form a church family on Sundays and for programs and ministries at other times throughout the week.

We are a Baptist church by denomination, with the belief that we are a community of believers who are called to serve. We belong to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

Beginning May 2nd, we are excited to gather together again for services in our beautiful sanctuary.  Sunday Morning Worship begins at 11AM. Appropriate health and safety protocols will be followed, and nursery will be available for children under five. If you are not able to join us in person, the services are livestreamed and recorded on YouTube at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church, Athens, GA.  We hope you can join us!

Our Core Values
  • The Bible is God's written word.
  • Christians are free to interpret the scripture as led by the Holy Spirit.
  • The local church is free to choose its direction under God's guidance while maintaining separation of church and state.
  • We receive salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Baptism by immersion is Christ's example, but like the early church, we recognize baptism by sprinkling and pouring.
  • Men and women are called equally for special Christian service.
  • Our mission is to evangelize and meet human needs.
  • Our giving of moneys, prayers, and work support Christ's mission, evangelism, education, and discipleship.
Our History...

Prior to 1958, there was no Baptist Church in Athens south of Broad Street. The need for a church in the Five Points area had long been recognized by members of the First Baptist Church, and several committees studied the problem.

The Lesser home, a cream brick building at the intersection of Milledge and Lumpkin streets, was rented and a mission started there on March 2, 1958.

On October 26, 1958, the mission was constituted "Milledge Avenue Baptist Church." This, the last Sunday in October, we celebrate as our birthday.

The Church and property were officially dedicated May 3, 1959. Those who had united with the church before this date were designated Charter Members.

A Welcoming and Affirming Congregation

The members of Milledge Avenue Baptist Church believe in the love of God for all persons, and we believe that inclusion is central to the gospel call "to love."  We are committed to providing equal access and participation in all facets of the life and ministry of our church (including, but not limited to, membership, baptism, ordination, marriage, teaching, staffing, and leadership) without regard to ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, or gender expression.

Resolution approved by the Board of Deacons (April 2021) and the Congregation (May 2, 2021).
